Why people tend to purchase used cars rather than new ones in India?

Of the thousands of questions that float in our minds when we think of buying a car, the simplest is whether we should buy a new car or go for a used car. Buying a new car definitely has its plus points. We get brand new car which is not used, along with it we get the latest technology on offer and the best warranty without paying extra. Brand new cars come with the latest safety mechanisms and higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Other than these financing a new car is more convenient than a used car and we do not have to pay extra for maintenance at least till some time. Most importantly, not much physical exertion is required while buying a new car, because most of the work is off loaded to the dealer to come up with the car specs that we want, the same is not true while buying a used car for we have to pay visits to all those sellers to inspect the car and check it before buying.

But in spite of all the advantages of purchasing a brand new vehicle, people in India are getting more inclined towards buying used cars. There are several reasons why they do:

Though interest rates on new cars tend to be low for new cars, the total price of used cars, even after slamming the interest amount, are found to be much lower than the cost of a new vehicle. The price difference between a new and used car is certainly huge.

The benefit of this is that people can afford a nicer model which they would probably not be able to fit in budget had it been a new one. So they can not only ride a nice car, but also at a much lower price. So buying a used car offers greater number of options to buy from.

All cars lose their worth in terms of value with every passing month and mile, but the major depreciation occurs right when you buy a new car. Some cars can lose up to more than 40% of their value in the first year itself. But with used cars, there is no depreciation in value.

Price of a new car includes various kinds of taxes like road taxes etc and other random fees, regardless of which vehicle you are buying. But buying a used car from a private seller will not involve paying such random fees.

So overall, purchasing a used or pre owned car definitely has its benefits. And with technology today the experience of buying a used car is totally different from what it was earlier. Starting from user reviews to know what to expect from the used car to calculating ownership costs and used car valuation, every information that might be needed ever is all available to the people, which is why they prefer buying used cars to new cars.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle Technology– Auto portal on the future of cars

Imagine you are driving and suddenly coming up to a heavy traffic jam. There is no way you could escape the traffic jam then. If only somebody had informed you about the impending traffic in advance, then you could have slowed down your car and sped away on an alternate route. Well, this is exactly what vehicle-to-vehicle technology does. The numerous cars on the roads are connected to each other through a wireless network and each car sends out the entire information about their drive.Put in simple words, vehicle-to-vehicle technology (V2V) is a system where cars are able to talk with each other while on move.V2V is also known as VANET which means Vehicular Ad Hoc Network.

How it works

Under this system, the cars will have a 360 degree communication range of 300 metres up to one kilometre. It would be more like a WI-FI network where every car will be able to send, capture and retransmit signals. All information will be exchanged including a vehicle’s position, and many more. It could also give out information regardingapproaching road conditions, routes, signals, parking space availability, accidents or breakdowns of any particular link. Such a system will surely avoid any accidents and also save lots of time.

Deterrents

Although V2V technology will offer loads of benefits and safety, there are a couple of issues that question the smooth working of the system.Firstly there are concerns about privacy. Secondly if the software system is hacked there could be major traffic jams on roads or cars would be bumping up into each other constantly. The signals can be affected by poor weather as well. Further V2V is going to be a costly affair as the system’s technical framework and management structure has to be hi-tech. It is also not clear as to who would bear this cost – the consumers, automobile manufacturers, transport department, state and local governments or others.

Implementation

Currently this system is nowhere in practice, but there are studies and research going on everywhere. Automobile manufacturers like BMW, Audi, Honda, General Motors, Volvo and Daimler are working hard to liven up this technology. The U.S. Department of Transportation has been conducting studies on this technology along with the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute in Ann Arbor for the past few years. And now United States is the only nation to approve V2V technology and has even plans to make it mandatory by 2017. India is still very far from this technology as our market here is just opening to the idea of hybrid and electric cars.

Mahindra NuvoSport vs. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

On paper, it may look like a really hard comparison- the Vitara Brezza is clearly ruling the sales charts while the Mahindra NuvoSport feels like a car much bigger than the compact SUV segment where it is being positioned by M&M. The sub 4m SUV segment is hugely lucrative in India and car companies are realizing this and hence this flood of upcoming launches in the segment.

Design wise, the Brezza offers a neat design with clean lines and subtle styling cues while the NuvoSport is more flamboyant, eye grabbing and is visibly more intimidating and big as compared to the Vitara Brezza. The Brezza has a black dashboard with aluminum touches and build quality is slightly better than the NuvoSport. The NuvoSport gets a dashboard similar to the Quanto. The Brezza offers seats that are a little too firm while the NuvoSport comes with wider seats but they are not as supportive. The NuvoSport has a longer wheelbase and more interior room. The jump suits are the back make it a 5+2 arrangement though these added seats are ideally suited for children.

The NuvoSport is wider than the Brezza and hence more comfortable on long trips. The NuvoSport has two extra seats, big space under the rear bench and a bigger boot. The Vitara Brezza gets keyless entry, push button start, navigation, Apple CarPlay and projector headlamps which are not present in the NuvoSport along with automatic climate control and a cooled glove box and reverse camera. The NuvoSport only has parking sensors at the back. Both the cars have ABS, EBD and dual airbags. The Brezza and NuvoSport both come with touch screen infotainment systems though the former is easier to use. The Brezza has a 1.3 litre diesel motor which dishes out 90 PS and 200 Nm while the NuvoSport has a more powerful and punchier engine. However, the lower weight of the Brezza makes it quicker and VGT eliminates all traces of turbo lag.

However, the NuvoSport is one to choose if you are big on power. The NuvoSport has a 101 PS and best in class 240 Nm 1.5 litre engine. The NuvoSport’s cabin is more silent as compared to the Vitara Brezza. Both cars come with a five speed manual transmission unit. The NuvoSport is taller than the Vitara Brezza and has the better suspension system of the two. The Vitara Brezza is easier to park and maneuver though. Overall handling is better in the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. The NuvoSport is priced at INR 9.12 lakhs for the top end model which is a little cheaper than the Vitara Brezza’s INR 9.54 lakhs for the top model. The NuvoSport offers 17.5 kmpl and the Brezza offers a really impressive figure of 24.3 kmpl.

This goes to show that when it comes to total ownership costs of both models, the Vitara Brezza edges past the NuvoSport. In terms of handling, drivability, features and overall experience, the Brezza is definitely the better car to buy.
